Depot Street Orchard got its start in March 2015 when 124 Asian pear trees were planted on 20 acres near Downtown Jonesborough. Another 127 plus a few apple trees were planted a year later. Apples, almonds, cherries, plums, peaches, nectarines, blueberries, raspberries, goji berries, and arctic kiwis were planted in 2017, so the next several years will see more variety from this orchard.
Depot Street uses permaculture principles to control pest populations. Permaculture involves the use of different plants to attract birds, beneficial insects, and animals to fight invasive or negative pests which allows the orchard to use little to no synthetic chemicals.
Like many fruit producers, the late frosts in spring 2021 decimated Depot Street’s supply of asian pears. 2022 saw a minimal harvest, but they are hoping to get back to production in 2023.
